Ohio GranuFlo® and NaturaLyte® Dialysis Recall

On March 29, 2012, The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that Fresenius Medical Care (FMC) was voluntarily recalling its dialysis medication GranuFlo® and NaturaLyte®.  This dialysis acid concentrate has been recalled due to risk of improper prescribing leading to alkalosis, heart attack, and death. It was a Class I recall, the most serious type of recall used when a product poses a reasonable probability of causing serious injury or death.

Fresenius Medical Care Failed to Warn

The dialysis recall was initiated after an FMC internal memo, dated November 4, 2011, was leaked to the FDA. FMC operates the largest chain of dialysis clinics in the U.S., and sells dialysis products to non-FMC clinics. The memo warned of the dangers of GranuFlo®, but was only sent to FMC clinics. Outside clinics which use GranuFlo® and NaturaLyte® were not warned about the dialysis problem and how to protect their patients from heart attack and death.
